About

The Paper was the student newspaper of Dana Hills High School, the public high school on the hill above Dana Point, California. The school opened in 1973, belongs to the Capistrano Unified School District and draws its students from Dana Point, Capistrano Beach, Laguna Niguel and San Juan Capistrano. Its campus is also home to the South Orange County School of the Arts (SOCSA) and to a marine ecology program known for its spring field study in Baja California.

Between March 2019 and November 2021 the staff of The Paper published news, sports, features, reviews and opinion pieces on dhhsthepaper.com. This site keeps 316 of those stories readable, at the same addresses they had when they were first published, sorted into 4 school years.

What you will find here

The stories appear as the students wrote them, with their bylines and dates. We fixed broken formatting, removed dead widgets, share buttons and comment prompts, and turned links to pages that no longer exist into plain text. Opinion pieces are the opinions of their writers at the time. Most of the original photographs were not preserved, so many stories now run without pictures.

A few stories about films, games, sports leagues, public health and local events carry a short note marked “Update, October 2026” that says what happened next. Those notes are written for this archive, cite their sources, and never add anything about the students or teachers in the story.

What we left out

Most of the people in these pages were teenagers. We did not restore profiles of individual students, college-commitment announcements, senior wills, class rankings, the 2020 digital yearbook or the author pages, and we did not restore a memorial piece or stories built around a student's health or family. In the stories we did restore, we removed personal family details about teachers and a few remarks that identified students beyond what a school paper needs. Game reports keep the players' names as they were published, because that is ordinary sports coverage.

If you appear in one of these stories and want something changed, the request will be taken seriously.

Who runs this

This archive is maintained independently. It is not run by Dana Hills High School, the Capistrano Unified School District or the former student staff. The Harbor Desk essays are written for the archive today and are signed as such; they are not the work of the original reporters.
